Bangkok Dinning Guide Thailand
If you have never tasted Thai Cuisine before it owes much of it's appeal to the exotic spices, herbs and seasonings from China, India, Java and Portugal. The final art of the country's cuisine comes from the skill and ingenuity of cooks. Some visitors have heard that all Thai food is extremely hot. Although some Thai dishes are quite spicy, far more dishes are completely mild.
Much of the heat of the spicy dishes comes from red or green peppers, commonly referred to as chillies. If you don't want spicy food, it's a good idea to learn the words "Mai Phet" meaning, NOT HOT!
Ploenchit
If the riverside represents Bangkok's historical roots, the areas around Ploenchit road, Chiltlom and Lang Suan are the new face of Bangkok. Expansive shopping malls with glamourous brand name shops and billboards advertising "ultimate extravagance" the area has its fair share of chic and smart places to eat. Around Lang Suan just off Chitlom among the high end apartments are lots of interesting little restaurants and smooth bars.
Riverside
Bangkok's traditional heartland, the riverside, is a great place to go for a sundowner, a romantic dinner cruise, a relaxing lunch, or for afternoon tea. Alongside the old temples, warehouses, wooden houses and old buildings you'll find classy hotels serving wonderful buffet lunches and sublime afternoon tea. You'll also find local restaurants perched on old wooden piers serving seafood platters, floating restaurants and smart places to eat in Thai houses along the river banks. Choice, ambiance and great food.
Siam
Synonymous with shopping, Siam provides a huge variety of eating places to pause between shopping at one mall and the next. Inside and around the shopping malls are lots small restaurants, fast food chains (local and international) coffee shops and good value food courts. Great places to eat when you're on a shopping mission.
Sukumvit
Sukhumvit Road stretching east to west across central Bangkok to the suburbs, is home to many of Bangkok's established hotels, restaurants and expat favourites. Alongside the old noodle shops and street vendors that still remain, are many ethnic restaurants hidden away along Sukhumvit's many side streets (Sois) as well as those on the main road around the hotels. You'll find English pubs, Japanese Sushi bars, Egyptian and Indian restaurants, Health food places, Thai expat favourites, Chinese and western restaurants, and excellent hotel dining. If there's a particular kind of cuisine you fancy, chances are you'll find it somewhere around Sukhumvit.
